Black Girl Culture – Exhibition reception and gallery talk with curator Scheherazade Tillet
Start Date: 3/9/2017Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 3/9/2017End Time: 8:00 PM
Event Description
Black Girl Culture is a pioneering photographic exhibition that gives black teens a safe place to tell their stories. The exhibition is the brainchild of Photographer and youth organizer Scheherazade Tillet.
Tillet is the founder of A Long Walk Home, a nonprofit organization that uses art therapy to inspire young women and protect girls from violence in her Chicago community.
As an organizer and a curator, Tillet felt moved to curate an exhibition of her own, one that told the story of black girls in America today. As a photographer, Tillet wanted to do more. “I wanted my girls to tell and archive their own stories,” she said. “How do they define girl culture themselves? I knew a true story had to come from within.”

Exhibition runs: February 27 – April 7, 2017 Gallery hours 10am-3pm M-F
